COMMUNIQUÉ ON
THE CONFERENCE OF 25 APRIL
APRIL 25 FROM 15:00H (03:00 am) WATCH ONLINE ON
The Organising Committee of the
Conference Freedom from War, originally planned
for 25 April in Florence (Odeon Cinema Theatre), met on Tuesday 10 March to
evaluate the situation immediately following the Government decision to put the
whole country under quarantine until 3 April.
The theme of the Conference, which is
presently developing positively from both the
organisational and political standpoint, is - “Leaving the War System,
for a neutral Italy” - and supports Julian Assange in his struggle to avoid
extradition to the United States. Participating will be a number of prestigious
national and international speakers.
These two motivations are of exceptional
importance. The first coincides with “the greatest deployment of US forces in
Europe since the end of the Cold War”, according to the description by the
General Secretary of NATO, Jens Stoltenberg. The initiative in itself is a
provocation not only against Russia, but also the European people who want to live
in peace. It has taken on an even greater dimension of insanity since it is
scheduled to take place while Italy and Europe are attempting to deal with the
crisis brought about by the coronavirus Covid-19.
The second motivation is inspired by the necessity to end the persecution of the “hero of our time”, Julian Assange. He is the man who revealed to the world the truth about the power of the USA - and the US Government now wants to punish him, with an intimidating political trial aimed at all the journalists in the world – an illegal trial against a foreign citizen who was working for world democracy.
So – we understand the exceptional nature of the situation in which all of Italy now finds itself, and the necessity of shutting down the epidemic as quickly as possible. But we have no intention of giving up the exercise of our democratic freedoms, which are now restricted by the measures adopted by the government.
The gravity of the epidemic and this particular moment in Italian and world politics does not call for the renunciation of the constitutional rights of every Italian citizen, but their firm reaffirmation. The 25 April (National Holiday in Commemoration of the Liberation of Italy) is, in this sense, a symbolic date and, for most of us, unforgettable.
It is for this reason that we are
maintaining our engagement, and hope to multiply it, so that on 25 April, we
will be able to invite Italians – those who have no wish to remain
“indifferent”- to demonstrate their desire for peace and justice.
We shalll continue to work to make this Conference a reality. On 3 April we will re-examine the situation, including everything that is based on Government decisions. And we shall evaluate the forms we need to adopt in order that the candle of democracy and justice may stay alight – even symbolically only in Florence, or in another meeting place yet to be defined.
May Italy leave the war system! Freedom
for Julian Assange !
