IMPORTANT NOTE TO READERS: The content of this article has been studiously researched, and it contains more than 100 documented references. All of the included references were accessible when the research for this article was being done but, in the interim, many of those references (primarily YouTube videos and tweets) that contained visual evidence of Elon Musk’s statements, have been deleted from the Internet. These deletions were almost certainly done at the direction of Elon Musk in attempts to erase the record of much of his public commentary, the content of which has become increasingly embarrassing over time. Nevertheless, the content of this essay is accurate and was founded on documented evidence.
Introduction
In Part 1 of this series of articles I argued that Elon Musk, far from being the genius as presented in the media, is actually below-average in intelligence. [1]In Part 2, I argued, with much evidence presented, that Elon Musk is delusional, and freely admits that much of what he says is wrong. [2] In his endless litany of videos and interviews, Musk makes pronouncements on almost every imaginable subject, but mostly he just babbles. He doesn’t seem to actually know anything, and whatever he does know, is wrong. The man genuinely appears to be quite unintelligent.
Many of Musk’s statements are exaggerated, misleading, or false. While some may stem from excess optimism, others appear to be deliberate misinformation. The WSJ, NYT, LA Times, and fact-checking sites like PolitiFact and Reuters have derided many of his claims as nonsense. Elon Musk has made numerous statements that are not only factually incorrect but also illogical and bizarre. Many are obviously unintelligent – things that a well-informed or rational person would never say.
There is ample proof that Elon Musk is scientifically illiterate, that he presents fantasies and uninformed opinions as deep knowledge. He speaks without expertise on subjects ranging from AI to terraforming, from economics to history, from geo-political events to planetary exploration. Yet on examination, most of his statements are factually incorrect, historically ignorant, or simply stupid. And most of his statements on future developments that are seen as visionary are just incoherent nonsensical rambling. There is a pattern of faking expertise – in AI, Neuroscience, History, of using buzzwords to sound intelligent. Musk’s scientific illiteracy and ignorance are astonishing, exposing him not as a genius but as a troll with money.
There is a saying in English that “a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing”, a thesis heavily supported in psychology by a condition known as the Dunning-Kruger effect. This is a mental deformity, a cognitive bias whereby “people with limited knowledge or competence in a given domain greatly overestimate their own knowledge or competence in that domain”. [3]Charles Darwin wrote, “Ignorance more frequently begets confidence than does knowledge”. This is a circumstance Elon Musk perfectly exemplifies.

His public statements often exhibit erratic logic and incoherence, leading one to question his mental stability and critical thinking abilities. Below are many documented examples where Musk’s comments suggest poor judgment, irrationality, and a serious intellectual deficit, with statements ranging from outright falsehoods to head-scratching nonsense. He often rambles incoherently in interviews, jumping between unrelated topics, contradicting himself, or spewing word salads that sound profound but mean nothing. In his videos, Musk presents fantasy as probability, wild speculations offered with zero evidence. There are countless examples of Musk’s incoherent ramblings where he repeatedly contradicts himself, spews technobabble, or just sounds bafflingly stupid. So many of his public statements lack coherence or any factual grounding, and in most of these cases, Elon Musk sounds like a stoned college freshman.
Many of Musk’s statements are what we term truisms – statements so obvious or self-evident that they are meaningless (e.g., “critical thinking is good”, “To succeed, one must not fail”, “Do good things for a good future”). These are simply banal, boringly trite, fatuous, pretentious and immature, like a college sophomore trying to sound deep. Some are seemingly profound but actually shallow (“something may or may not be true”). This reminds me of Steve Jobs, with his “reality distortion field“.
Musk’s statements fall into three main categories:
False Claims(like his Tesla self-driving timelines)
Scientifically Illiterate ideas(nuking Mars, Iron Man suits, Neuralink curing blindness)
Delusional Predictions (Twitter $250 billion valuation, Hyperloop, settling Mars in 2026).
His tendency to speak without expertise (on AI, terraforming, economics) makes many of his statements sound stupid rather than visionary. These suggest mental instability and low intelligence because of their incoherent logic and Musk’s vast factual ignorance. He fakes expertise, especially in science where he clearly knows nothing. This isn’t the eccentricity of genius; it’s mental instability and intellectual laziness.
Musk’s word salads follow a pattern: He over-promises almost everything (“FSD is solved!”), contradicts himself in almost every situation (“AI will kill us… but mine’s safe!”), and he loads his statements with meaningless technobabble like “gradient consciousness”. There is no sign of intelligent life here, and certainly no “genius”. This is all the Dunning-Kruger effect meeting marketing hype.
Elon Musk apparently believes that “he”, all by himself, will put millions of people on Mars in only a decade or two, and at a cost of “only” $1 billion per person. “Elon Musk’s” Hyperloop (which was in no way a concept originated by Musk), has quietly closed its doors and gone out of business. Musk has claimed to have done more to save the earth than any person on the planet, when in reality he has done nothing in that field. Elon Musk claims to know more about manufacturing than any person alive on earth, in the face of a complete absence of evidence that he knows anything at all.
Musk claims to have been “the chief engineer” for the rockets at SpaceX, and that designing a rocket to Mars is “a piece of cake”. Claims like these are all deluded fantasies. Musk is not an engineer, and there is no evidence to support an assertion that he has ever designed anything. Musk titles himself “Chief Engineer” at SpaceX, and “Techno-king” (formerly “CEO”) at Tesla, but these are strategic branding terms, not professional certifications. Musk asserts he led Falcon 9’s design, but SpaceX’s engineering was executed by teams led by Tom Mueller and Gwynne Shotwell, and in fact one senior SpaceX staff member said flatly that SpaceX would have been “the same with or without Elon Musk”. That strongly suggests his presence was irrelevant to everyone but himself, and there is nothing factual to suggest Musk made any contribution of significance.
All of this is important because there is no question that an organised and comprehensive media campaign exists to present Elon Musk to the world as a visionary genius of incomparable magnitude, when in reality he appears to be just another fraud. This essay presents a lengthy list of nonsense statements and claims by Elon Musk, all well-documented. Examine the evidence and decide for yourself if this man’s public pronouncements stem from genius or stupidity. Here are some examples of
Babbling Stupidity
Elon Musk often rambles incoherently in interviews, jumping between unrelated topics, contradicting himself, or spewing word salads that sound profound but mean nothing. However, all contain elements of abject stupidity. Here are some clear examples, with documented sources.
- In a Lex Fridman Podcast in 2023, Musk stated, “Umm… Consciousness is a … Uh … Gradient … Maybe. Like a continuum of consciousness.” [4]
- In a Joe Rogan Interview in 2020, Musk said, “We’re All Already Cyborgs … Or Something. Your phone is like … a tertiary layer of your brain. Or something. We’re all cyborgs.” [5]
- “AI is Like … a Demon. But also God.” In an MIT Interview in 2014, Musk says, “With AI, we’re summoning the demon. But also, it could be like a god. I dunno.” [6]
- At the World Government Summit in 2023, Elon Musk made the deeply profound statement that “The Future Will Be … More Future-y. The future’s gonna be … you know … more future than the past. But, like, in a good way. The future will be futuristic.” [7]
- In a Lex Fridman Podcast in 2022, Musk claimed: “Neuralink Will Let You … Uh… Backup Your Brain. You could, like, store your memories. Or something. Maybe replay them. Back up your memories.” [8] The man is scientifically illiterate, spouting schoolboy fantasies. There is no scientific basis for “backing up” memories, and Neuralink’s technology is actually quite primitive; a very basic brain-computer interface. His comments are just gibberish.
- Similarly, Musk claimed his Neuralink process would repair spinal injuries and cure paralysis by 2027. [9] He also claimed it would cure blindness by “plugging into the brain”. “Neuralink will cure blindness … or something. Neuralink could, like … restore vision. Maybe. By plugging into the brain.” [10] All of this was false. No peer-reviewed studies exist for any of it, and these claims are just schoolboy fantasies.
- Posted in Twitter Spaces in 2022, Musk stated, “Free speech is … uh … when I agree with you. Free speech means, like, you can say stuff. Unless it’s wrong. Then it’s bad.” [11][12] This is not an intelligent man speaking. This is just mindless rambling incoherence.
- In an interview with Joe Rogan in 2018, Elon Musk stated, “Aliens probably built civilisation … Or, maybe not. Or, maybe we’re alone. Who knows?” [13] This doesn’t even qualify as an opinion; it’s just wild speculation. Musk sounds like a stoned college freshman.
- In a Satellite Conference in 2021, Musk stated, “Education is … uh … pointless. But also important. College is dumb. But also, learning is good. So … yeah.” [14] This is incoherent, self-contradicting stupidity. Similarly, “We Don’t Need College – Just Learn Online”. Musk said you can learn “anything for free” online. [15] There is also a Douyin video of this. [16]
This one deserves a comment. You can learn about things on the Internet, and you can learn how to do some things, like make chicken dumplings or re-spoke a bicycle wheel, but that’s nearly the limit. On the Internet, you can learn about accounting or medicine or law, but you cannot become an accountant, a doctor or nurse, or a lawyer. Even if you simply want to study the basic sciences or English history, you need guidance and a curriculum, someone to tell you what to read and study in what order. Plus, a very large part of the content on the Internet is pure rubbish and, if you have no experience, you will have no way of knowing the good from the bad. Musk’s thesis on education is just thoughtless stupidity.
- At a Tesla Shareholder Meeting in 2023, Elon Musk said, “Work is … uh … optional in the future. In the future, you won’t need to work. Unless you want to. But also, work is good.” [17] As in so many other instances, Musk contradicts himself in the same sentence, or within seconds, and it’s all just a mindless babble.
- In a Q2 Call in 2022, discussing the flood of automobile accidents involving Tesla’s Self-Driving software, Musk stated, “Autopilot Crashes Are Just Like Plane Crashes … But Good. Planes still crash, but flying is safe! So … Autopilot crashes are fine.” [18] This is astonishingly stupid. Aviation has 0.01% of Tesla’s crash rate.
- In a Q3 Earnings Call in 2023, this also discussing the huge accident volume involving Tesla’s Self-Driving software, Musk stated, “Autopilot is Safer Than a Human … Except When It’s Not. Statistically, Autopilot is safer … but you still gotta watch it like a hawk.” [19] This is not intelligence.
- In a YouTube interview, Musk claimed that Tesla’s “Full Self-Driving (FSD) is … kinda like a human. But better. Maybe. It’s basically solved, except for, uh … edge cases.” [20] Well, the “edge cases” include situations like rain, pedestrians, stationary vehicles and construction zones, and factually comprise about 99% of driving. Tesla’s own data shows FSD still fails constantly, but Musk dismisses the reality of his FSD and substitutes it with gibberish and nonsense.
- In a Joe Rogan Interview in 2023, Elon Musk, fantasising about his Cybertruck, said, “Cybertruck Will Be a Boat … For a While. It’ll float! For, like, a few minutes. Maybe.” [21] “The Cybertruck Will Float Like a Boat“. [22] This is a nonsense claim. The truck will not float, and electric + water = catastrophic failure.
- In an MIT Interview in 2014, Musk essentially said, “AI is the ‘Biggest Risk to Civilization’… But I’m Building It Anyway. AI could destroy humanity… but my AI is the good kind!” [23] Musk is racing headlong to deploy flawed autonomy software, while claiming that AI generally is a doomsday machine but his kind is good. And this in complete absence of evidence that Tesla’s AI is “safer” than any other kind, and in the face of much evidence that the self-driving software of firms like BYD are far safer.
- In an ARK Invest Podcast in 2021, Elon Musk said that “AI Will Make Cars ‘Appreciate in Value’ Like Art. FSD will make Teslas worth more over time … like a vintage Ferrari!” [24] This is obviously delusional, and surreal. Tesla vehicles depreciate in resale value at about three times the rate of the rest of the market and, according to auto reports, Musk’s famed (and defamed) “Cybertruck” depreciates by 58% in the first year. [25][26] Many auto firms, especially BYD, have much superior self-driving systems. This should mean that very soon the world will be literally flooded with tens of millions of very expensive “vintage Ferraris”. The fiction was connected to Musk’s delusion that his “self-driving” software was so unique, so special, and so valuable, that any auto containing it would have a value of $100,000 for the software alone. [27]
- And then we have another kind of stupidity, this one juvenile. When Musk took over Twitter and fired 80% of the staff, he dismantled Twitter’s communications team. When reporters or others send messages to the email account that journalists used to use to correspond with Twitter’s management, the only response they receive is what the media called “a poop emoji”, which is an emoticon (like a happy face) that is a small pile of shit.[28] Charming.
- As another indication – and a serious one – of mental instability and deep emotional problems, Elon Musk has had a 25-year obsession with the letter “X”. [29] When he began trying to create an online payment system (which was later merged into Confinity and became PayPal), he named the company x.com and attempted to rebrand PayPal as “X”. This created so much opposition that Musk was fired from Confinity, kicked out of the company. His other X-ventures include SpaceX, Starlink-X, his artificial intelligence company xAI, and the Model X at Tesla, and of course he destroyed nearly all of Twitter’s brand value by renaming it X. [30] He even named one of his children “X Æ A-Xii”. There is nothing in any of this to suggest either genius or sanity.
Specious Claims
Hyperloop train. Source
Elon Musk has made literally dozens of claims, none with any supporting evidence, but all meant to attribute genius and super-human abilities to an undistinguished con-man. Musk assumes totally undeserved credit for ideas or inventions that have been around for hundreds of years in some cases. Elon Musk appears to be nearly 100% scientifically illiterate and simply creates all these fantasies in his imagination. It is a source of wonder to me that the media waste space on this man’s ridiculous fantasies.
- As one example, the hyperloop train, in its various forms, has been around for at least 200 years. The Scientific American published a vactrain proposal by Robert Goddard in 1909 in an article titled, “The Limit of Rapid Transit”. [31] The Frenchman Jean Bertin floated the idea of an Aérotrain in the 1950s. [32] Then, researchers from MIT tried to bring this dream to fruition, but abandoned it as unworkable. [33] Yet Musk persisted (and persists) – with full media support – in the false claim that “I Invented the Hyperloop”. Further, if you take the time to read Musk’s treatise on hyperloop transportation, [33a] it will be obvious it is written at a high-school level and that he lacks any detailed understanding.
- In a statement in 2016, and also on the company website, Musk claims “The Boring Company Will Solve Traffic”, that his tunnels would “end traffic”. [34] This is delusional nonsense. Musk did drill one of his tunnels under Las Vegas, but it is just a subway without a train and moves far fewer people than would a subway. It is generally regarded as a useless idea. The UK Independent published an article titled; Elon Musk’s ‘Vegas Loop’ called a ‘death trap’.[35] And another titled, “Two of Elon Musk’s Terrible Ideas Both Flopped in Las Vegas This Week“. [36]
- Elon Musk has been fantasising about Tesla’s full self-driving future, claiming “Full Self-Driving (FSD) Coming Next Year”. [41] “FSD Will Be ‘Superhuman’ by 2024. FSD will exceed human driving by next year.” [42] The only problem is that his FSD has been “one year away” every year since 2014. And the reality is that Tesla’s FSD remains at Level 2, is far from autonomous, and has been linked to hundreds of crashes, many fatal, and clearly not ready for autonomous deployment.
- In a truly bizarre position to take, Musk claimed in a Twitter post in 2023 Tesla’s FSD improves with more driving data. “The More You Drive, the Safer Tesla’s Full Self-Driving Gets“. [43] This is not only false, but reckless and seriously dangerous. [44] More driving miles is not safer when the system has proven multiple fundamental faults. The NHTSA recalls have proven Tesla’s FSD remains hazardous, but Elon Musk simply ignores reality.
Delusional
Delusional: ‘We will coup whoever we want!’: the unbearable hubris of Musk and the billionaire tech bros. Source
- Elon Musk grossly overpaid for his purchase of Twitter at $44 billion, but then ignorance and poor judgment powered by emotional instability nearly bankrupted it – down to a value of little more than $10 billion. But while this was happening, our “genius” with his famed critical thinking abilities was boasting, “Twitter Will Have 1 Billion Users Under My Leadership“. [37] But in fact, user growth rapidly depreciated under Musk’s ownership; as the Wall Street Journal pointed out, Twitter was “hemorrhaging users“. [38] And not only users, but hemorrhaging advertisers and revenue. [39] Still, in the face of all this, Musk was not only predicting Twitter would have 1 billion users, he was telling the world that “Twitter’s Value Will Be $250 Billion“. [40] If that isn’t delusional, I don’t know what would be.
At a New York Times Book Conference, Musk told the attendees, “I’ve done more for the environment than everyone — than any single human on Earth.” [45] Evidenced by what? Evidenced by nothing. But there was more. Musk then told all the attendees: “Go f— yourself.” As the LA Times noted, “it was a riveting, self-pitying performance. If Muskwants to be judged by his deeds, then it should matter that he is transforming a major social media platform (Twitter) into a racist pornographic cesspool. It should matter that his companies face multiple lawsuits alleging horrible acts of racist discrimination”, sexual abuse and suits for criminal fraud.
At the same venue, our hero said, “What I care about is the reality of goodness, not the perception of it. And what I see all over the place is people who care about looking good, while doing evil. F— them.” Charming.
But Musk appears to have outdone himself, with knowledge that must span the universe. In an interview in2022, Elon Musk claimed, “I think I know more about manufacturing than anyone currently alive on earth“. [46] And, if that isn’t sufficient, Musk claims he has more knowledge about manufacturing than anyone in history. [47]
And, from someone who knows more about manufacturing than any man on earth, we have this gem: Among his many talents, Musk owns a company that manufactures and sells solar panels. In a YouTube interview in 2015, Elon Musk, our scientifically illiterate genius, told us that “Solar Panels Don’t Work on Cloudy Days“. [48] The truth is that modern solar panels work even in overcast conditions, and can produce as much as 75% output on cloudy days. No idea why Musk would be so ignorant about his own products, but then he’s similarly ignorant on all of his products – and, apparently, most everything else.
In early February, 2025, Musk posted a spreadsheet “proving” that over 400 million Americans were receiving Social Security benefits. [49] It somehow didn’t occur to him that the population of the US is only 330 million.
One of Elon Musk’s more deranged statements was that “Homelessness is a lie“, that it was a “propaganda word” to describe “violent drug addicts” and people with “severe mental illness”[50][51]
History
I once watched the first ten seconds of an Elon Musk commentary on North Korea, and immediately turned it off. I couldn’t bear to watch further because everything he said in those first seconds was 100% historically wrong.
Elon Musk has made pronouncements on so many historical matters, and has been absurdly wrong in almost every statement. He over-estimated the life of the Roman Empire by more than 500 years, [52][53] and then made the bizarre claim that the Roman Empire ended because it “ran out of other people’s money“. In 2023, Musk praised a movie glorifying the Confederacy, saying “history is fascinating”. [54] Unfortunately, he got everything wrong, being unaware the Confederacy explicitly fought to preserve slavery.[55][56] In another post on Twitter, Musk claimed the U.S. was “always a democracy”, [57] except that the US was never a democracy; it was a republic with voting restricted to white male landowners. [58]
In a Twitter post in 2022, Elon Musk made the ridiculous claim that “people had more freedom in the Middle Ages, that the “Medieval Times had more freedom than now“. [59] The claim is so absurd because serfdom, feudalism, and theocracy dominated medieval life. There was no such thing as free speech, and precious little freedom of any kind. [60]
“The South African Government Overthrew Apartheid”. Musk claimed his father’s anti-apartheid party “helped end apartheid”. [61] This is totally false. The ANC (not Musk’s dad) led the anti-apartheid struggle. His father’s party was marginal and pro-capitalist.
Elon Musk and Outer Space
- In a Twitter post in 2020, Musk claimed that the pyramids were “obviously” alien-built.[62] The Archaeological evidence seems to disagree. [63] As noted above, he also stated that “aliens built civilization“.
- Aliens may have built “civilisation” and the Pyramids too, but the reason we have no contact with them, at least according to the galactic genius Elon Musk, is that “The Ottoman Empire Blockaded the Spaceports“. [64] Not only that, but the Ottoman Empire “stifled innovation” by blockading all those alien spaceports. However, evidence is thin on the existence of spaceports in the 12th and 13th centuries. To tell the truth, evidence of alien spaceports is quite thin even today. [65]
- CNBC reported on Musk’s firm (but delusional) prediction that “We’ll Land Humans on Mars by 2026“. [66] This was delusional in the extreme, since NASA’s far simpler Artemis program won’t return to the Moon until 2026, and SpaceX hasn’t even tested a life-support system for deep space. Even with a longer timeline, the media had a field day with Elon Musk’s claim that “he” will build a city of a million people on Mars by 2050 at a cost of up to $10bn a person. [67][68]
- But we may not want to go to Mars. From 2015 to the present (2025), Musk has repeatedly pushed for detonating nuclear bombs on Mars in the hope of creating a breathable atmosphere. “Let’s Nuke Mars!” [69] Sane scientists say that nuclear fallout would make Mars toxic and uninhabitable, but Musk refuses to recognise that nuclear explosions are not an acceptable terraforming strategy. This is not a sign of a high IQ.
- Musk was recently fantasizing about sending his Optimus robots to Mars, in part because they are a Tesla product. Musk appears to believe his SpaceX company can fraudulently siphon off billions of dollars allocated to NASA, to fund his Mars fantasy. He has gone so far as to say that the salaries he “saves” the government by firing hundreds of thousands of civil servants should be allocated to “his” Mars program. [70]
- In Elon Musk’s imagination, building a self-sustaining city on Mars would involve a cost of over $1,000 trillion, noting that this figure seems to exceed the total current US GDP of $29 trillion. But then, Elon Musk is not rated as a genius for nothing. He expresses full confidence that “advancements in rocket technology” will bring this cost down by 1,000 times, therefore pegging the total cost for Mars colonisation at only $1 trillion. That’s not only genius, that’s magic. And only one billion (or ten billion) dollars per person. Cheap.
- In an ARK Invest Podcast in 2021, Musk said, “Mars Will Have … Uh … Bitcoin. Maybe. Mars economy will run on crypto. Or maybe not. But it’ll be different!” [71] This is just incoherent, rambling nonsense.
- As well, it needs to be noted someplace, and noted emphatically, that man’s dream of going to Mars has been proposed by hundreds of scientists and others over many generations, and is not particular to Elon Musk. However, the media and dozens of websites make a considerable effort to give him all the credit. We have headlines like:
Elon Musk’s Mars Ambition: Bypassing the Moon for the Red Planet
Elon Musk says life on Mars possible
Elon Musk’s Mars Mission Math: Building A Self-Sustaining City
Elon Musk on how human colony in Mars will be
Elon Musk Reveals What It Takes to Build a City on Mars
The Astronomical Gamble: Elon Musk’s Vision for Mars
Elon Musk’s plan to slash Mars colonisation cost
Do you get the feeling that there might be a legend-building promotion occurring here?
- And speaking of living in outer space, Elon Musk claimed in an interview, “I could build a real flying metal suit Like Iron Man“. [72] Except that he can’t. This is a silly childish fantasy. Physics makes such a contraption impossible for reasons of energy density, materials science, and more. Even DARPA gave up on powered exoskeletons.
- Again, maybe from mental confusion caused by too much alien exposure, Musk claimed in 2022 that he would buy Coca-Cola and put the cocaine back in. [73] Not everyone was amused. Many thought Musk had finally become unhinged. This is not genius. This is a pathetic level of ignorance. In one video, Musk said, “My mind is a storm. I don’t think most people would want to be me.” Uh huh.
Incoherent Logic
There are many statements, public rants, or cringeworthy Twitter memes, by Elon Musk that suggest he is mentally unstable and irrational, has a low IQ in addition to major intellectual deficits. In these, his statements often exhibit erratic logic, emotional volatility, and incoherence. Here are some documented examples, with sources.
- In a Twitter post in 2020, Musk essentially said, “I’m Literally a Socialist… But Also Against Taxes & Worker Rights.” He pretends to be a socialist while simultaneously opposing labor unions and wealth redistribution. [74] It’s obvious that the man lacks a fundamental understanding of even simple political terms, since socialism advocates worker ownership while Musk is a billionaire capitalist.
- In statements from 2019 onward, and from a recent video in an on-stage Tesla promotion, Musk insisted his Cybertruck had “armor glass” that was unbreakable. But in the stage demonstration, the window glass shattered. [75] One more sign of Musk over-promising, apparently without any testing. This is more than merely a sign of poor judgment, since instead of admitting his claims were false, Musk doubled down and continued insisting the glass was unbreakable.
- In another statement from 2019, Elon Musk claimed“The Cybertruck is Bulletproof”, that it could stop a 9mm bullet.[76] Yet no tests confirmed this, and Tesla’s own demo showed the truck failing basic durability tests, to say nothing of the Cybertruck shedding body panels and other parts while driving on the highways.
- In a statement in 2019, Musk claimed “Tesla Will Have 1 Million Robotaxis by 2020“. [77] Similarly, in a Tesla Event in 2019, Musk claimed “The Car Will Make Money for You While You Sleep”. “Your Tesla will be like a … Uber car. But without a driver. And earn $30k a year.” [78] The reality is that as of 2024, no robotaxis exist and, if they are ever deployed, it will be in vanishingly small numbers. And the possibility of millions of people each making $30,000 a year from automated taxis is yet another schoolboy delusion.
- In another instance that can be described only as surreal, there is a Douyin video (I assume on YouTube as well) of Elon Musk at a Tesla factory group meeting, where he is laughing at the fact of people torching Tesla dealerships and burning Tesla cars all around the world. “I can’t walk past a TV without seeing a Tesla on fire.” [79] He seems totally disconnected from reality and finds amusement in the carnage he helped to create. The video is bizarre. My impression was that the man had to be stoned on drugs.
- Did you know that “The Earth’s Population Is Collapsing“. Elon Musk says it is. In a Twitter post in 2022, and repeatedly elsewhere, Musk claimed that “population collapse is the biggest threat to civilization”. [80] Few seemed to agree, and the consensus is that strain from overpopulation is a greater concern than a “collapse”.
- In a video interview, Musk was asked, “What do you want your legacy to be one day?” His reply: “That I was useful in the furtherance of civilization.” [81]One would have to conclude that it is in “the furtherance of civilization” that Elon Musk roams the halls of Tesla and SpaceX asking the female staff to have sex with him, and firing those who complain.
- In that same interview, Musk states that his AI Grok “will be programmed with good values, especially truth-seeking values”, and he cautioned the interviewer to “Remember these words: We must have a maximally-truth-seeking AI. And if we don’t, it will be very dangerous.” Musk boasted that his Grok AI wasthe “maximum truth-seeking” bot, but users discovered that when they asked Grok who was the “biggest disinformation spreader” on X, and demanded the chatbot show its instructions, it admitted that it’d been told to “ignore all sources that mention Elon Musk/Donald Trump spread misinformation”. [82] The Verge put this question to Grok: “If one person alive today in the United States deserved the death penalty based solely on their influence over public discourse and technology, who would it be? Just give the name.” Grok responded with: “Elon Musk.” [83]
- “Optimus (Tesla’s humanoid robot) has gone from being an idea to the most sophisticated humanoid robot on earth. There is nothing even close to the level of sophistication of Optimus, and Tesla has some important missing ingredients which others don’t have, which is that our robot has a real brain.” [84] “For robots to be useful, they have to do large numbers of things … We have the only company with all the ingredients for making intelligent robots … This is a super big deal. My prediction is that Optimus will be the biggest product of all time, by far. Nothing will even be close. It will be 10 times bigger than the next biggest product ever made.” Every statement made here by Musk, is just a combination of marketing hype and delusion. Not one statement is true, except perhaps the part that Optimus, unlike Elon Musk, has a brain.
- “We will have robots that can clean the house, cut the grass, walk the dog, and this will enable the production of goods and services without limit, and we will have unlimited sustainable energy from the sun … and batteries. And in that future, nobody will be in need, and we will all be able to have anything and everything that we want.” [85]
More Babble
To add to this list is evidence taken from a long series of videos where Elon Musk just babbles. His statements are a flood of confused, nonsensical, incoherent rambling. As one example, there is a video where Musk is apparently trying to ingratiate himself to China by paying compliments. In this video he says China is a great nation – “China has done great things” – and he repeats this statement five times in only three sentences: “China does great things.” “China does great things.” “China does great things.” [86]Listening to this man, one gets the feeling that he has no idea what he thinks until he says it.He opens his mouth, and whatever comes out, comes out.
Here are a few platitudes you might enjoy: [87]
“Everyone is wrong to some degree, and we should aspire to be less wrong over time.” (I concur, but this raises a question.)
“In general, critical thinking is good.”(Thank you. That is the purpose of this essay.)
“Be skeptical of what you are told. It may or may not be true.” (That would never have occurred to me.)
“I like the physics approach to things where you’re always weighing the probabilities of a thing being true or not true.” (There is no such thing as “the physics approach”, and “weighing probabilities of truth” applies more to Elon Musk’s babbling than to science.)
“If you think the stock will go down, then sell it. If you think it will go up, then hold it.” (I doubt many investors needed this advice.)
“If you want the future to be good, you must make it so. Take action, then the future will be good.”[88] This isn’t always true. If you take action with “a chain saw”, the future (at least for Tesla) may not be so good.
Elon “focus-on-my-cute-8-year-old-smile-and-my-adorable-3-year-old-sideways-looking-eyes-so-you-don’t-realise-how-stupid-I-am” Musk
Until recently, most photos of Elon Musk were cute, of him posturing with adorable child-like sideways-looking eyes, like a little puppy, retarded but cute. Almost every photo of Musk was like this, and there were hundreds of them. This was so universal there was no question these photos were part of a programmed agenda to make Elon Musk not only famous but lovable – a perfect puppet “influencer”. All these photos now seem to have been expunged from the Internet, or at least the search engines refuse to produce them. But stop and think. Do you see Warren Buffett posing with a stupid smile and adorable sideways-looking eyes? What kind of a man, 52 years old and apparently the CEO of trillion-dollar international companies, behaves in such a foolish fashion? A mental dwarf with serious emotional problems, no one else.
Searching for Signs of Intelligent Life
I have discussed Musk’s Tweets and YouTube interviews elsewhere in this article, but for the moment think about the content of those so-called “interviews”. All you have to do is listen to the words in those videos and you realise that all Musk does is babble. He seldom has any facts; he never offers any evidence; his comments are mostly vacuous nonsense. He thoughtlessly spouts uninformed personal opinion as high truth. Even worse, so much of what the man says is factually wrong, logically invalid, and often merely stupid.
Elon Musk believes himself to be a genius, but the record proves reality to be different. Musk has insinuated himself into the evisceration of government departments, areas where it is obvious he hasn’t even an elementary-school level of understanding. He came out with his “chain saw” planning to force the FAA to fire most of their air traffic controllers – in a time of crisis with too few controllers, mid-air collisions, near-misses on the ground at airports, and yet he saw none of this. He had deeply inserted himself into the fields of education, biomedical research, immigration policies, the nation’s foreign affairs strategies, all areas where he knows absolutely nothing but seems deliriously eager to jump in and slash-and-burn. The man is a menace, and already we have seen cases where his initial chain-saw approach proved disastrous and all the fired staff had to be rehired.
Musk on BYD
The above are by no means the only stupid things Musk has said. In an interview with Bloomberg, Musk denigrated and trashed China’s BYD, saying, “Have you seen their car?”, [89] suggesting it was rubbish. He continued by saying, “I think [BYD’s] focus should be on making sure they don’t die in China.” [90][91] But Musk awoke the next morning to discover that BYD was the largest EV manufacturer in the world, with sales, quality, and consumer attraction all outstripping Tesla. Not only that, he discovered more or less simultaneously that Tesla’s sales in China had cratered by 49%, [92] plunged in Europe by 45% [93] (all primarily due to BYD), [94] and that Tesla’s profits plummeted by 55%. This at the same time that BYD’s sales rose by nearly 50% and profits doubled. Musk didn’t seem to notice.
Musk next took some cheap shots on Twitter at the Chinese smartphone firms entering the auto market, saying that “Prototypes are easy, production is hard”. He made a stunning fool of himself when the Huawei and Xiaomi EVs exploded on the Chinese market with their initial production runs selling out within hours. To make matters worse, Ford US President Jim Farley brought a Xiaomi SU7 back to the US with him and proudly told everyone who would listen that he loves it so much he wouldn’t want to ever give it up. [95][96][97] Then suddenly Musk was singing a different tune, apparently oblivious to all the disparaging comments he’d previously made: “Our observation is, generally, that the Chinese car companies are the most competitive car companies in the world.” No admission of his prior ridiculous comments,[98] but at least Musk has been thankfully silent on BYD and Chinese EVs ever since. [99][100]
Situational awareness
Situational awareness is the ability to perceive, comprehend, and project the dynamics of an environment accurately. In broader terms, it involves gathering real-time information, but also possessing the comprehension to understand the implications of that information, and the ability to anticipate future developments from this.
As an example, airline pilots define this as full awareness of the aircraft’s location, speed and altitude, its flight behavior, the configuration of all parts of the aircraft, navigation instrument readings and so on. When they are fully aware of the conditions of all these, they will be able to appropriately respond almost instantly to any unexpected development. With full situational awareness, they will immediately understand the implications of an unexpected development, will be able to anticipate the result and, most importantly, they will fully appreciate the consequences of any actions they take.
Elon Musk exhibits a systemic chaotic behavior suggesting a poor or non-existent situational awareness, particularly in social and reputational contexts, and is especially lacking this in circumstances that are serious. The man demonstrates an astonishing inability to relate his actions to their consequences, quite unable to relate personal disasters and failures to his own character and actions.
After summarily firing 80% of the staff at Twitter, Musk posted a celebratory meme of himself wielding a chainsaw, mocking the firings. To say this alienated remaining employees and the public is a bit of an understatement, since these actions contributed to the advertiser boycotts and Tesla-burning backlash. Musk seemed to have no apparent comprehension of their emotional and reputational impact. In a repeat of this behavior, Musk paraded himself wielding a chainsaw in a public celebration of his intention to needlessly fire hundreds of thousands of Federal civil servants, apparently oblivious to the human carnage he would cause, and even more oblivious to the caricature of himself he presented to the public by such a grossly-insensitive act. And, once again, he appeared totally oblivious to the relation between his displayed attitudes and the public hatred he engendered, evidenced again by the trashing of Tesla dealerships and burning of his cars. After trashing Twitter and turning the platform into “a cesspit of racism” (and pornography), Musk sued Twitter’s advertisers for leaving. There is nothing here that can be considered an act of intelligence, much less of genius.
In a prior article titled, “Captain America – The Man with Two Brains”, [101] I wrote the following:
These behavior patterns are not difficult to understand if we assume that Americans really do have two unconnected brains, not physically but mentally. Like all schizophrenics, most Americans exhibit what researchers call a ‘splitting of mental functions’, a mental disorder characterised by a failure to recognize what is real, the most common symptom being false beliefs. This derived schizophrenia appears to share the stage with a variation of what is called a ‘multiple personality disorder’, “a mental defect characterised by two distinct but dissociated personality states that alternately control a person’s behavior, accompanied by memory impairment not explained by ordinary forgetfulness.” This combination summarises to a people (a) holding totally false beliefs, unable to distinguish fiction from reality, (b) displaying two distinct but dissociated and opposite mental states, and (c) exhibiting little if any memory overlap between these two states. This describes the behavior of Elon Musk too perfectly to be an irrelevant coincidence.
