The former editor of the Tribune de Genève, [Guy Mettan-RI] visited Moscow and presented his new book Russia and the West: A Thousand Year War, which reviews the phenomenon of Russophobia: its roots, historical evolution and modern incarnations.

Izvestia had a chance to interview him.

Izvestia What inspired you to write about this?

Guy Mettan: There are two reasons why I began this work. The first is a personal, family reason. In 1994, my wife and I adopted a Russian girl, who now is now 25. Her name is Oksana, and she is from the Vladimir region. After we adopted her, I became interested in learning as much as possible about Russia and becoming familiar with this large country. In the 1990’s, one could obtain Russian citizenship after adopting a Russian child. So we did that: my wife and I are citizens of Russia and Switzerland, and Russia became part of our family’s life and history. I am a citizen of Russia, but I pay taxes in Switzerland.

The second reason why I started this work is professional. My trips to Russia gave me an opportunity to learn what this country was all about. I understood how big the difference was between the Russia presented in the Western media and the one I saw myself. I just couldn’t bear to watch this situation, and decided to investigate the reasons.

What made me actually start this project was the events in Ukraine in 2014. I saw the Western press systematically supporting one side, expressing only one point of view – that of the government that usurped power in Kiev. And I decided to figure out why this happened.

The roots of Russophobia run deep in the US. They go much further than censored or slanted media or political gameplaying in Washington. What has to, or at least should be accepted is that Russophobia is a belief system, just like a religion, but with no spiritual nature, no holy prophets but resembling the worst of religion. Russophobia is a religion of hate that no one understand or will acknowledge the root cause of.

Perhaps we might want to take a look.

We will examine how America’s view of the world took root due to the efforts of religious missionaries and was eventually hijacked by the Deep State.

We’re going to show how a powerful group, called the China Lobby, financed by massive American military aid, intended to fund Chiang Kai Shek’s fake war against Japan, bought Washington, “lock stock and barrel,” and began blaming Russia for the world’s ills.

Though Chiang himself was a lifelong communist and close friend of Stalin, as the Chinese rose against his ineffective rule after the defeat of Japan and began backing Mao tse Tung, a witch hunt began targeting pro-Russian Americans, anti-fascists, and blaming them for “losing China.”

A similar “blame Russia” effort went on when the US “lost Vietnam” to Ho Chi Minh. Few Americans remember or take note that Ho was America’s “man in Vietnam” against the Vietnamese and was, in actuality, placed in control of Vietnam by the US after the war.

It was only when France threatened to elect a communist government did the US back their colonial return to Vietnam which ended in the military defeat at Dien Bien Phu in 1954.

Similarly, in Korea, the US continued to back the Japanese puppet, Syngman Rhee, after Japan’s surrender in 1945. While MacArthur democratized Japan, America oversaw the slaughter of democratic elements in South Korea which led to the overall uprising that eventually brought in North Korea in what the US termed an “invasion.”

If this smells a bit of America’s actions in Syria more than half a century later, I think we can say that the pattern continues.

Deep Background

First of all, when one looks at the US in the 19th century and America’s view of the world, Russia is totally off America’s “radar” as it were. You see, America had gone through significant changes in population based on mass immigration and with that a greatly expanded economy, both industrial and rural/agricultural.

The allegations of ‘Russian meddling’ only make sense if they’re put into a broader geopolitical context. Once we realize that Washington is implementing an aggressive “containment” strategy to militarily encircle Russia and China in order to spread its tentacles across Central Asian, then we begin to understand that Russia is not the perpetrator of the hostilities and propaganda, but the victim. The Russia hacking allegations are part of a larger asymmetrical-information war that has been joined by the entire Washington political establishment. The objective is to methodically weaken an emerging rival while reinforcing US global hegemony.

Try to imagine for a minute, that the hacking claims were not part of a sinister plan by Vladimir Putin “to sow discord and division” in the United States, but were conjured up to create an external threat that would justify an aggressive response from Washington. That’s what Russiagate is really all about.

In his most recent marathon Q & A session with Russian citizens, Russian President Vladimir Putin hit hard and long on the logicality of Russia’s geopolitical position today. The eternal pragmatist, Putin showed renewed confidence and vigor in painting for the audience the reality of the current American strategy. Putin’s professions and a growing anti-America trend may show us a reversal of the tides soon. Here are some key points and indicators from the Russian front.

With Donald Trump on the veritable “tariffs” warpath with world nations, Vladimir Putin did not miss the chance to take a stab at the way America now seems to run roughshod over the rest of the world. Referring to Trump’s new tariffs levied onto neighbors as “sanctions” by another name, Putin said:

“The introduction of US tariffs on steel, on aluminum, not only for Europe but also for Canada and Mexico, are sanctions disguised in other terms.” 

Russia’s leader went on to ask (referring to Canada and Mexico), “Did they also allegedly annex Crimea?” His point could not have been made more plainly or aptly, for successive U.S. administrations have had nothing but ambitions for strategies against all foreign partners since decades now. America is a partner to no other land unless the benefit flows to American businesses are threefold. Friends and enemies are “handled” in the same fashion – and Putin’s narrative is now surfacing outside Russia and the CIS.
