Vyacheslav Nikonov: The word “war” has been heard increasingly more often lately. US and NATO politicians, even more so the Ukrainian military, have no trouble saying it. Do you have more reasons to be concerned now than ever before?

Sergey Lavrov: Yes and no. On the one hand, the confrontation has hit bottom. On the other, deep down, there’s still hope that we are adults and understand the risks associated with escalating tensions further. However, our Western colleagues introduced the word “war” into the diplomatic and international usage. “The hybrid war unleashed by Russia” is a very popular description of what the West perceives as the main event in international life. I still believe that good judgment will prevail.

Vyacheslav Nikonov: Recently, the United States has ratcheted the degree of confrontation up to never-before-seen proportions. President Joe Biden said President Vladimir Putin is a “killer.” We have recalled Russian Ambassador to the United States Anatoly Antonov.

Sergey Lavrov: He was invited for consultations.

Vyacheslav Nikonov: Hence, the question: How do we go about our relations now? How long will this pause last? When will Mr Antonov return to Washington?

Sergey Lavrov: What we heard President Biden say in his interview with ABC is outrageous and unprecedented. However, one should always see the real actions behind the rhetoric, and they began long before this interview back during the Barack Obama administration. They continued under the Trump administration, despite the fact that the 45th US President publicly spoke in favour of maintaining good relations with Russia, with which he was willing to “get along,” but was not allowed to do so. I’m talking about the consistent degradation of the deterrent infrastructure in the military-political and strategic spheres.

Foreign Minister Lavrov just made the following statement that Russia is willing to sever her ties with the EU if the EU introduces new sanctions.  He said:

“Мы исходим из того, что мы готовы [к разрыву с Евросоюзом]. Если мы еще раз увидим, как мы уже почувствовали не единожды, что в каких-то областях накладываются санкции, которые создают риски для нашей экономики, в том числе в самых чувствительных сферах, — да. Хочешь мира — готовься к войне”

“We proceed from the fact that we are ready [to break with the European Union]. If we once again see, as we have already felt more than once, that sanctions are imposed in some areas that create risks for our economy, including in the most sensitive areas, – yes. If you want peace, prepare for war“.

This is exactly what I have been advocating for and predicting.

Not a moment too soon.

‘Change course before it's too late’: Lavrov calls on Europe to reject false notion of ‘Russian threat’ in Munich speech
NATO’s eastward expansion and large-scale drills near Russian borders may lead to unpredictable consequences and it's time for Europe to change course, Russia's FM Sergey Lavrov told the Munich Security Conference.
Europe is where the "crisis of confidence" in international relations is felt the most, Foreign Minister Lavrov said as he took to the stage, explaining that "the structure of the Cold War rivalry is being recreated" on the continent.
"Escalating tensions, NATO's military infrastructure advancing to the East, exercises of unprecedented scope near the Russian borders, the pumping of defense budgets beyond measure – all this generates unpredictability," he added.
He then called on Europe to focus on security cooperation and helping to uphold international treaties, instead of following a policy of confrontation.
Give up on promoting the phantom of the 'Russian threat' or any other threat – before it's too late – and remember what unites us all.
Lavrov noted that "breakthrough technologies" must not be used to disrupt international stability further, stressing the importance of efforts aimed at "preventing an arms race in space and not allowing the militarization of cyberspace."

He also relayed Moscow's proposal for the permanent members of the UN Security Council (China, France, Russia, the UK and the US) to hold a standalone summit in order to have "a frank and honest exchange of opinions on how to preserve peace for future generations."
Lavrov answered several questions from the media, which mainly revolved around the state of Russia's relations with Turkey over the flare-up in Syria's Idlib, the last terrorist enclave in country's north. Moscow and Ankara have been working to settle the military escalation in the area, but both parties made accusations that agreements had not been fulfilled after the Syrian and the Turkish troops clashed.
"We have very good relations with Turkey. But it doesn't mean that we must agree on everything," Lavrov said.

However, victory against the terrorists in Idlib is "inevitable," he stressed, adding that separating the militants from "normal opposition" remains a pressing issue. According to the top Russian diplomat, that's something Ankara must do, due to its influence with the anti-government fighters.

Lavrov stressed that Moscow’s “correspondence (with the US) will show that we were prepared to cooperate on any issue that had to do with the US suspicions about our interference in elections, but the Obama administration rejected that vehemently.”

Le ministre russe des Affaires étrangères, Sergueï Lavrov, a violemment dénoncé, le 7 novembre 2018, la manipulation du concept d’anti-terrorisme par les Anglo-Saxons.
Selon le ministre, le nouveau concept de « lutte contre l’extrémisme oppressif » vise à valider les actions des terroristes lorsqu’ils servent la stratégie anglo-saxonne contre des gouvernements qu’ils qualifient d’« autoritaires ».
M. Lavrov a rappelé que chaque État est responsable selon ses propres lois de la manière dont il lutte contre l’idéologie extrémiste, tandis que la coopération intergouvernementale est soumise à la législation universelle des Nations unies.
Il a souligné que : « Les auteurs de ce concept [de « lutte contre l’extrémisme oppressif »] sont fondamentalement prêts à justifier les extrémistes et à les exonérer de toute responsabilité pénale ».

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov met with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang this past Thursday.
Lavrov’s visit comes as Pyongyang, Seoul and Washington are preparing a historic meeting between US President Donald Trump and North Korean Leader Kim Jong Un on June 12th.
Russia’s role in brokering the summit between the US and North Korea has been played down, but make no mistake, Russia has (and is developing) key security, energy and infrastructure project on the Korean peninsula.
Alexander Mercouris in London (E4) explains why Lavrov went to North Korea to meet with Kim.
  • Lavrov invited the North Korean leader to visit Russia.
  • He told Kim that Moscow supported peace and progress on the Korean peninsula and highly valued a declaration signed by Pyongyang and Seoul.
  • Earlier, Lavrov met with his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho and others at the Supreme People’s Assembly building in the North Korean capital.
  • Lavrov and his deputy Igor Morgulov paid their respects at a monument to Soviet soldiers in Pyongyang’s Moranbong Park.
  • The Russian Foreign Ministry said earlier Lavrov and Ri were expected to discuss “vital issues of bilateral relations and key international and regional issues.”
