For the first time in its official existence in 1985, Lebanon’s Hezbollah has now clashed on the battlefield with the Turkish army, one of NATO’s strongest. The face-to-face clash between Hezbollah and the Turkish military took place in the rural area of Idlib where dozens of Turkish service members lost their lives while fighting side-by-side with jihadists and foreign fighters of different nationalities, including al-Qaeda members. The Turkish-NATO army used similar weapons and tactics to Israel. They surprised Hezbollah by using armed drones and precision bombing behind the frontline, killing nine militants and wounding 65 in one single attack. So many Hezbollah militants were killed in one place due to the collapse of the entire building they gathered under, located behind the main battlefield line.  
 Another factor was the unexpected withdrawal of Russian air coverage at the moment Turkey was sending its Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles(UCAVs) (or Unmanned Aerial System (UAV) better known as armed drones) deep inland, bombing Iran and its allies for the first time. This confrontation has introduced a new military doctrine to Hezbollah militants and has taught them new lessons based on experiences Hezbollah has never been confronted with in the past. Turkey used its UCAVs, TRG-122 satellite-guided rockets, High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and ground attacks by the Turkish army fighting alongside jihadists. It is most likely what Israel has been threatening Hezbollah with, in the event of war.

Turkish President Recep Tayyib Erdogan had decided to attack Russia, Iran and Syria when he sent his army to Idlib and bombed Russian and Iranian allies on the Idlib front. The Turkish president is feeling strong and believes he is holding many good cards to play against his Russian counterpart President Vladimir Putin. He trusts he is in a position to bomb Iran’s allies, despite the fact that they hold armed drones, precision missiles and experienced Special Forces that can hit Turkey very hard in the case of war. 
The conflict Erdogan envisions between Russia, Iran and Syria on one side and Turkey on the other would suit the US and Israel. They would be happy to see Presidents Putin and Erdogan sinking into the Syrian quagmire and Hezbollah losing more men in the Levant. Negotiations, intense battles and attempts to reshuffle the military situation are taking place behind the scenes. President Erdogan is trying to improve his military position on the ground before his meeting with President Putin in Moscow tomorrow Thursday- but to no avail. Stormy negotiations can be expected.
President Erdogan is not in a position to bang his fist on the table. At the time Russia is receiving Erdogan a tweet by the Russian Foreign Ministry reminds him how Russia defeated the Ottoman Empire and forced it to sign the Treaty of San Stefano in March 1878 in Constantinople. It has accused Erdogan of altering Syrian demography after occupying the Afrin province and Tal Abyad, forcing the departure of over 350,000 Kurds and the relocation of Turkmen militants and their families instead.

A significant development took place in Syria on Friday.  A Russian attack on a Turkish convoy in Idlib in north-west Syria killed 36 Turkish soldiers and officers. In retaliation, Turkey launched an unprecedented armed drone attack that lasted several hours and resulted in the killing and wounding of over 150 Syrian officers and soldiers and their allies of Hezbollah and the Fatimiy’oun. The Turkish drones destroyed dozens of tanks and rocket launchers deployed by the Syrian Army along the front line. Russia ceased air support for Syria and its allies demanded from Russia an explanation for the lack of coordination of its unilateral stoppage of air support, allowing the Turkish drones to kill so many Syrian Army and allied forces. What happened, why, and what will be the consequences?
In October 2018, Turkey and Russia signed an agreement in Astana to establish a de-confliction zone along the Damascus-Aleppo (M5) and Aleppo-Latakia (M4) highways. It was agreed that all belligerents would withdraw and render the roads accessible to civilian traffic. Moreover, it was decided to end the presence of all jihadists, including the Tajik, Turkistan, Uighur and all other foreign fighters present in Idlib alongside Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (former ISIS, former al-Qaeda in Syria), Hurras al-Din (al-Qaeda in Syria), and Ahrar al-Sham with their foreign fighters and all “non-moderate” rebels. Last year, Hayat Tahrir al-Sham took full control of Idlib and its rural area under the watchful eyes of Turkey.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Russia believe the war on terror has priority over and above any Israeli provocations. Syria and Russia are of necessity avoiding a ‘battle between wars’, a term used by Israel to sneak in and hit-and-run an enemy target not sufficiently important to trigger an all-out war. Eliminating jihadists on the Aleppo-Idlib front is far more critical to Syria than responding to Israeli attacks on the Syrian army’s military capability and its destruction of military warehouses. Israel’s military command understands Syria’s priorities and is taking advantage of the situation. It has carried out hundreds of attacks in Syria on various targets in different Syrian cities, without changing the balance of forces and capabilities. But stopping Israel’s arrogant violations of Syrian sovereignty will become an easy task when Damascus is ready to direct its guns towards Israel.
In fact, despite over 400 Israeli attacks on Syria since the beginning of the war in 2011, the Syrian army has now liberated most of Syria, with the exception of the north, occupied by Turkish and US forces. The Syrian army has moved north, knocking at the gates of Idlib for a month. Israeli attacks have not undermined a Syrian army that has shown its competence in fierce battles at Ghouta (east of Damascus), in Deir-ezzour (north-east) and in the north, clearing a large security perimeter around Aleppo.

Viele Iraner stellen die Vorteile der Bewaffnung und Finanzierung der vielen Verbündeten des Iran im Nahen Osten in Frage, während der Iran unter dem bisher härtesten “Maximaldruck” der USA leidet. Irans Verbündete sind über Afghanistan, Jemen, Irak, Syrien, Libanon und Palästina verteilt. Ist die iranische Unterstützung dieser Verbündeten die Hauptursache für die aggressive Haltung der USA gegenüber dem iranischen Volk und seinem Staat, oder gibt es andere Faktoren? Was bringt den Iran dazu, diese Verbündeten zu finanzieren und sie mit den modernsten Kriegsgeräten zu versorgen und bereit zu sein, auf ihrem Territorium zu kämpfen und zu sterben?
Seit sich Irans “Islamische Revolution” 1979 unter der Führung von Imam Khomeini durchsetzte, wurde das Land stark sanktioniert, wobei die Sanktionen mit der Ankunft fast jedes neuen US-Präsidenten zunahmen. 1979 hatte der Iran keine Verbündeten, sondern war von Feinden umgeben.  Seine regionalen Nachbarn unterstützten gemeinsam mit westlichen Ländern Saddam Husseins Krieg gegen die “Islamische Republik”. Der Krieg der USA gegen den Iran hat seinen Ursprung im Sturz seines Stellvertreters, des Pahlavi-Schahs. Es wurde offengelegt, wie die CIA 1953 in einem organisierten Staatsstreich gegen den demokratisch gewählten Premierminister Mohammad Mossadegh Pahlavi an die Macht brachte, um das iranische Öl unter US-amerikanisch-britischer Kontrolle zu halten. Die Demokratie war nie das eigentliche Thema: westlich provozierte Kriege können als durch Interessen und das Streben nach Dominanz motiviert verstanden werden. Aber Versuche, Regime zu stürzen, werden vom Westen immer öffentlich im Namen von Freiheit und Demokratie gerechtfertigt.

Bien des Iraniens se demandent quels sont les avantages pour l’Iran d’armer et de financer ses nombreux alliés au Moyen-Orient alors que les USA exercent une « pression maximale » qui fait plus mal que jamais. Les alliés de l’Iran sont disséminés en Afghanistan, au Yémen, en Irak, en Syrie, au Liban et en Palestine. Le soutien de l’Iran à ces alliés est-il la principale cause de l’attitude agressive des USA à l’endroit du pays et de son peuple? D’autres facteurs entrent-ils en jeu? Comment l’Iran parvient-il à financer ces alliés, à les rendre plus forts en leur procurant de l’équipement ultra perfectionné et à les rendre prêts à combattre et à mourir sur leur territoire? 
Depuis l’avènement de la « Révolution islamique » en 1979 sous le leadership de l’Imam Khomeini, le pays subit de lourdes sanctions qui s’accumulent pratiquement chaque fois qu’un nouveau président des USA s’installe à la Maison-Blanche. En 1979, l’Iran n’avait pas d’alliés et était entouré d’ennemis. Ses voisins régionaux se sont joints aux pays occidentaux pour soutenir la guerre de Saddam Hussein contre la « République islamique ». La guerre des USA contre l’Iran trouve son origine dans la chute de son mandataire, le chah Pahlavi. On a su comment la CIA l’a porté au pouvoir en organisant un coup d’État contre le premier ministre démocratiquement élu Mohammad Mossadegh en 1953, afin de maintenir le pétrole iranien sous le contrôle des USA et du R.-U. La démocratie n’est jamais le véritable enjeu, les guerres provoquées par l’Occident étant plutôt motivées par ses intérêts et son désir de dominer. Sauf que l’Occident justifie toujours ses tentatives de renversement de régimes au nom de la liberté et de la démocratie.
En 1979, les USA ont tendu un piège aux Soviétiques pour les amener à envahir l’Afghanistan en soutenant les moudjahidines à l’origine d’al-Qaeda. Le résultat catastrophique que cela a entraîné et les phénomènes destructeurs similaires sont habituellement décrits comme des « conséquences imprévisibles », afin de rationaliser les coûts faramineux de ces interventions sauvages dans la vie d’autrui et les affaires mondiales. Sauf qu’en 2001, les USA se sont enfoncés précisément dans le même bourbier en envoyant des dizaines de milliers de militaires US envahir l’Afghanistan. Le plan des USA était de bloquer la voie à tout retour possible des Russes en Eurasie, d’affaiblir la Russie, d’entourer l’Iran d’une chaîne d’éléments hostiles, de contraindre tous les pays concernés à la soumission, notamment les pays riches en pétrole, et d’empêcher ainsi toute alliance possible avec la Russie et la Chine. Cet objectif des USA vaut toujours au Moyen-Orient. L’histoire n’a jamais été un bon guide pour les leaders puissants et leurs administrations, pour la simple et bonne raison qu’ils se perçoivent apparemment au-dessus des leçons qu’ils pourraient en tirer.

La autopista M5 Damasco-Alepo estuvo bajo control yijadista desde 2012. El ejército sirio ahora la liberó, además de 140 ciudades, pueblos y colinas estratégicas. Turquía y los uzbecos, los uigures y Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (antes conocido como al-Nusra) no lograron proteger sus posiciones fortificadas, abandonándolas y retirándose hacia el área que rodea a Idlib.

Esta es la primera vez que el ejército turco ha sido bombardeado con artillería por el ejército sirio. Cinco oficiales turcos murieron en el aeropuerto militar en Taftanaz, la base donde se concentraban Turquía y sus yijadistas. Ankara se vio forzado a enviar su propio ejército al campo de batalla para compensar las debilidades de sus aliados yijadistas sobre el terreno.

La liberación de la M5 (432 km) de manos yijadistas estaba contemplada en el acuerdo de Astaná, firmado en octubre de 2018, condición que Turquía no honró desde entonces. El gobierno sirio llevó a cabo tres grandes avances hacia la M5, pero en esta oportunidad la decisión de recuperarla era definitiva. Este es un mensaje sirio-ruso al presidente Erdogan de que el tiempo se está acabando en Idlib. El pulso turco-ruso está trascendiendo las fronteras sirias. Esto también se hace evidente en Ucrania y Libia, en donde Turquía busca asumir un papel más influyente.
